We love to discover something a little different like these luxurious crewelwork cushions when it comes to interiors and accessories! There are a number of companies out there combining trends and breaking the mould, so we caught up with Debbie from Just Cushions to discover more about traditional crewelwork with a modern lift!
This new South West company selling handmade cushions is giving a contemporary twist to a traditional fabric. Just Cushions, based near Barnstaple in Devon, specialises in cushions made from crewelwork, much of it sourced from Kashmir.
What is Crewelwork?
Crewelwork is a fabric embroidered using coloured wools, often on linen or cotton base materials, and has a history that stretches back hundreds of years. It became very popular in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras in Britain, and was particularly associated with royalty and luxury. Embroidered crewelwork fabric has fallen in an out of fashion since then. Today, some of the finest hand embroidered crewelwork comes from Kashmir, where it is stitched by skilled artisans.
“I have loved crewelwork fabric for a long time, it has so much texture and character,” said Debbie Loat, founder of Just Cushions. “Having worked in the media throughout my career, last year I felt the time was right to indulge my love of needlework, and to set up a business making cushions from this wonderful traditional fabric."
Debbie goes on to say: “Many of my fabrics are sourced from Kashmir, where they are embroidered with extraordinary skill and care. I love the idea of giving a modern twist to this fabric which has such a long, illustrious history. I combine the crewelwork textiles with gorgeous designer fabrics and trimmings, often in strong colours, which adds to the vibrancy of this colourful, characterful fabric, allowing it to look equally at home in contemporary or traditional interiors.”
Crewelwork designs have a magical timeless quality about them, and are often inspired by flowers and nature. They add elegance, luxury and style to any interior space! If you are feeling inspired to add some Crewelwork cushions to your home you can find Just Cushions at craft shows and interior fairs in the South of England.
