Discover Wolf Blass

There are a great many winemakers in Australia, but few have the history that Wolf Blass does. Founded in 1966, this single house has won over 8,500 awards and continues winning today. Chief Winemaker Chris Hatcher has continued to produce outstanding wines from the Barossa Valley in Southeastern Australia. Australian Winemaking Founded by Wolfgang Franz Otto, this house has consistently been at the forefront of the Australian winemaking industry. Blass arrived in Australia from Germany in 1961. He was poor, but had a degree in winemaking. He found work at Scott and Tolley as a winemaker. Soon, he was able to start his own label. The rest is a long history of great winemaking. Blass’s famous quote was that his wines would “make strong women weak and weak men strong”. Blass was interviewed by Decanter magazine in 2014. His personality is as bold as his wines. "turned the bloody place upside down," he says, eyes twinkling with the memory. "I worked for eight or nine companies, for AU$2.50 an hour. Jim Barry, Bleasdale, Tolley’s, Basedow’s, Normans, Woodley’s. I was pretty busy. My little Volkswagen was running around all over the place.” Blass, still has definite opinions and has no problem sharing them with the world. His interviews are fun and interesting. Each one is a must read for wine lovers everywhere. As much as his opinions seem brash, they are also very difficult to argue with! Grape source Wolf Blass sources grapes from throughout Australia including Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, and Coonawarra.
